CRP versus white blood cell count (WBC)

CRP provides more accurate information than white blood cell count (WBC) for differentiation between bacterial and viral infection. WBC values are not consistent enough to be used in monitoring the effect of antimicrobial treatment in bacterial infections (see Fig. 3). Furthermore, CRP may be used to detect acute infection and to monitor antimicrobial treatment in neutropenic or immunosuppressed patients.
